A Phaeton is a type of mechanical horse-drawn carriage and a common form of transportation in 80 Days. There are several phaetons found around the globe that exist as possible modes of transportation for Phileas Fogg and Passepartout. These include;
- From Thessaloniki to Bucharest: the driver is a man named Florin, who hires out his phaeton to give rides to people through the mountains. While driving through the forest he will remark on the abundance of bears in the area, frightening Passepartout. As night approaches Florin will ask his passengers if they want to make camp or drive through the night; camping is safer but it will cost some time, though Florin will have to drive slower at night anyway.
